I received an invite to an invitation-only sale for either 12 year Van Winkle Special Reserve or 10 year Rip Van Winkle at almost MSRP. If you’re a brown liquor enthusiast like myself, you’ll immediately know that this is like a gold bar falling in your lap.
For those of you who don’t know, the distillery that has been making bourbon for over 100 years. The bourbon is high quality, small batch. They only do a limited run of bottles. This means that getting your hands on a bottle can be almost impossible. Not only that, but when you do find a bottle, the seller has likely priced it 5x+ the MSRP. Some have been listed for thousands of dollars, because they’re such a limited quantity.
I chose the 10 year cask strength Old Rip Van Winkle 107 proof. The description of the two made the Special Reserve sound like it might be on the sweet side. While the cask strength sounded spicy and warm. I also liked the label a lot!
Tasting it was pure heaven, there was never any buyer’s remorse with this bottle. I’ve shared it with a few people, including my Dad, who was blown away with the peppery spiciness of it. I’ll have to ration it out until I get another invite to a sale like that!
